What is a technical writer?

A technical writer is usually a graduate in one of any number of disciplines - for example, law, engineering, electronics, science - who gets paid to write 'how to' and other similar information. Full time or part time technical writers may work on a number of different project types - for example, writing instructions that help people use a particular product or service.

What projects do technical writers work on?

A technical writer might be paid to:

  • Write manuals to help users operate computer software, build computer hardware or assemble appliances, step-by-step
  • Write instructions for users to assemble or operate toys, furniture and similar items
  • Write policies and procedures into manuals that businesses can use. For example, a legal technical writer may assemble a company's 'employee manual' for human resources, explaining the procedures for employees to take holiday, claim expenses etc.
  • Write online help documents, to assist people in operating software, websites, a shopping cart, etc.
  • Write content for the Internet. This may include 'how to' type articles to gain traffic for a company's website.

Why work as a technical writer?

Technical writing has two distinct advantages:

  • It is a rewarding, highly paid job that allows you to use your creativity and writing talent to help people understand how to do something
  • It is a role that allows 100% complete flexibility - work when you want, on whatever projects interest you most.

Do I need to be qualified to write technically?

You don't need any particular experience or qualifications to become a technical writer. There are plenty of article sites that allow submissions from any writer and you build up your expert status based on article kudos alone. However, if you want to work as a technical writer for Academic Knowledge, you must either be a graduate or be studying on an undergraduate course. We offer our clients two different services, across different websites - some promise a graduate writer and for those, we'll only use graduates - others promise an undergraduate writer and our student writers can work on those projects
